John’s business background was in the financial services industry as a retail banker with a career that spanned 25 years. The last few years he worked in a sales management role in Southwestern Ontario leading 25 branches. In the latter years his entrepreneurial spirit and drive came to the forefront. It was during this time that his passion for the sport of triathlon got him thinking that Ontario needed a series of races that were focused on the camaraderie and fun that were central to Triathlon and Duathlon. In 2001 John, along with his friend and Ontario Pro Triathlete, Mike Buck, founded MultiSport Canada.
In the first year a young Jason Vurma helped John and Mike produce the 7 race series with a rag tag group of friends and relatives. Mike left in 2002 to pursue other business ventures and the team of Jason and John took on the goal of realizing the vision to become the premier triathlon event management company in Canada. MultiSport Canada realized that goal in 2011 when it became the largest triathlon series in Canada. While John is no longer attending the series races he is still involved behind the scenes.
John started participating in triathlon in 1989 and started to focus on longer distance races in 1998. From 1998 to 2011 he raced in 8 Iron Distance races with personal best races in Lake Placid in 2000, where he went 11:00:49 and in 2005 when he finished 4th in the 50 – 54 age group. Over the past few years he has found a love of road and gravel cycling and exploring the area around his new home near Creemore. Anne and John can be frequently found hiking on the Bruce Trail with their dogs Suki and Brio.
